Roberta Macdonald was born Roberta Hatt of Canadian Swiss and Oklahoma parentage. Her early experiences with her siblings, living in a small town in the Texas panhandle, play an important role in her book. Her early practical life with chores, babysitting, and sharing a paper route with her twin brother, was important in that it taught her interdependence at an early age. She combines her early values and upbringing with her many experiences in the very real world of being a parent and step-parent of four, years of teaching in public schools, and counseling teenagers and families.

When I was a teenager my aunt Roberta Hatt Macdonald (who was a teacher) hung up her teacher’s hat to start up a counseling center because she saw so much brokenness in her students, she wanted to move beyond the classroom to help more around her.

I had the privilege of going through her classes at her counseling center. I learned a lot, but the biggest lesson learned was to have compassion for others no matter what, and to not blame others for where we are in our lives.

People have had “baggage” since the beginning of time… it’s not new, it’s just more pronounced by the new ways of connecting….

Bottom line… we all need to be gentle with society, forgiving, compassionate, and kind. Grace is a gift… be generous with it. Have your values and opinions and beliefs, but don’t criticize others for having theirs.

If you can only be one thing…
Be kind. ❤️
